This Wednesday we take a look at a local, true to Maryland company called Wye River Provisioners, whose claim to fame is the original "Shuckboard." Used as a tool which rests comfortably on the edge of a counter or table, the beautifully crafted board offers a resting place for the oyster (and comes with a knife!) to prevent slippage. These make a wonderful housewarming gift or for anyone with an appreciation of oysters. Fortunately, oysters have been making a successful comeback in the Chesapeake Bay thanks to a great effort by Bay lovers all over, and there is no better way to support the growing industry than to eat local oysters!

Wye River Provisioners prides themselves on the craftsmanship that goes into finding the perfect wood, from either the local exotic wood shop or reclaimed from historic homes, and taking up to two weeks to perfect the details. Customizations are also available in order to personalize your board. Click on the image above or here to see the varieties of wood used, the crab mallets WRP also makes, and to place an order.

For instance, this kitchen holds court in the middle of our town’s trendy and trending restaurant and retail renaissance, Annapolis Towne Centre. In fact, it’s perched at the very top of it.

Lisa Consiglio Ryan eats what makes her feel good and listens to her body. And the Annapolis resident wants to help others do the same, which is why she wrote her cookbook, "Go Clean, Sexy You," available Nov. 17, 2015.

Consiglio Ryan clearly remembers the exact moment she first got the message – loud and clear – that to be "good enough" she needed to be skinny. And she wasn't "good enough."

She was 8 years old and ready to dance in a recital in her yellow cowgirl costume. A thoughtless comment about her weight from someone she loved crushed her confidence. That moment kicked off an almost 30-year battle with food, exercise and body image. Consiglio Ryan waged a mini war with herself and her body until her daughter, at age 3, asked why her mom didn't eat with her.

Luxury Townhomes Planned for Annapolis Towne Centre

By Shantee Woodwards

Coldwell Banker associate broker
Travis Gray has found that the luxury townhome market is strong in this region, particularly for longtime residents who want to downsize.

Earlier this year, Gray said, he sold a penthouse at the GrandView to a couple who had an Annapolis waterfront home and wanted a smaller space now that they had adult children and grandchildren.

Potential buyers “want to maintain a luxury level of living, but want the ease of a lock-and-leave situation, so they can go down to Florida or travel internationally,” Gray said. The GrandView buyers “wanted to maintain that luxury and all the amenities, but didn’t want to deal with the yard, dock and all of that stuff.”

Nantucket on the Bay

The community of Bay Ridge enjoys an enviable geography. Just south of Annapolis, it is surrounded by Lake Ogleton on the west and a broad expanse of the Chesapeake Bay on the east. From the air it is shaped like an arrow, pointed due east with two long stretches of beach on either side. It was founded as a summer colony, a place for residents of Baltimore and Washington to enjoy a cool breeze on a sultry day. There is still a relaxed and an informal air to the community, the kind of place where neighbors enjoy potluck suppers and children still ride bikes down the streets. The architecture is diverse but leans toward traditional and if there is a commonality among the newer houses, it is the cedar shingle.

This house was designed by Annapolis architect Cathy Purple Cherry for an active family with two young daughters. It presents a symmetrical facade to the Bay but is far from formal. The husband notes, “we vacationed a lot in Nantucket,” and they wanted a house reminiscent of the island. Purple Cherry describes the house as “center entrance shingle style,” and it evokes New England coastal architecture from the late nineteenth century. The family liked older houses, the wife says that she “really wanted a traditional center hall house,” and they loved the natural stone and cedar shingles that wrap almost all of the houses on Nantucket (local ordinance forbids siding houses in anything else).

Perhaps the most romantic pool is one that seems to spill off into the horizon, out into the sea. What could be more delightful than to float in a pool where the edge seems to slip right into the Chesapeake Bay? This waterfront home situated at the mouth of the Magothy River overlooks the Baltimore Lighthouse and beyond. Sailing ships pass by. Beneath the shade of white pine and magnolia trees is a pool deck for lounging and taking turns diving into the deep end.

A native of Anne Arundel County, Tina Colebrook has spent all of her life living and working in the Baltimore-Annapolis area.  She graduated from an Anne Arundel County High School, then pursued a degree in Architecture at the University of Maryland, College Park.  After college, she married and settled back in the area to raise a family, and began working with a local firm on high-end residential projects.

In May of 2011, equipped with over 20 years of experience and knowledge, Tina began providing architectural services as Tina Colebrook Architect from a home office.   In April of 2013, she opened the doors to a new office on Ritchie Highway in Severna Park, Maryland.   The projects that come into the office vary greatly in size and scope.  Some projects are as small as a concept elevation to improve “curb appeal”, others as large as new residential construction.  Several commercial projects have come through her office, and she has a thriving high-end custom Kitchen Design Division.
