It's that time of year when we break out the lights and put up the inflatable lawn ornaments! I guess it's actually been that time of year but with the weather being so mild and the trees still having a few leaves it seems a bit difficult to get into the mood.

Regardless, I thought I would offer some inspirational wreath-making tutorials for holiday decorating to keep your curb looking classy while hopefully getting you (and myself) more in the spirit of the holidays. Obviously I seem to like the simple, organic type wreaths, but that doesn't mean I don't love a good glitter show with lots of ornaments either!

If you'd like to try your hand at making a wreath but could use a little instruction, Whole Foods is offering a class on December 3rd from 2-4pm for $30. You can register for the class HERE.

We hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving as we did! If any of you actually give these tutorials a try we would love to see the results and hear about it! Or if you have your own tutorial you'd like to share, get in touch!

The vacant property at 110 Compromise St. on City Dock, the focus of years of debate by city officials and local residents, has been purchased for $4.15 million.

A developer with the project said that with demolition permits already awarded for the former Fawcett Boat Supplies building, the redesign will be "substantially completed by the beginning of next summer."

The former owner, Chandler LLC, sold the 27,775-square-foot property to a group led by Annapolis developers Mike Keenan and John Bruno in May. It had been unoccupied since Fawcett moved to Bay Ridge Road.

The Chesapeake Bay is home to some of the best seafood in the country. Even so, unless they live right on the water’s edge, some folks aren’t able to find fresh fish at their neighborhood market. It’s for this reason that the Oyster Recovery Partnership founded the Old Line Fish Company (OLFC), the Bay region’s first Community Supported Fishery and CSA style co-op.

After seeing the Wednesday Night Races (WNR) at East Greenwich Yacht Club in Rhode Island in 1958, Past Commodore Gaither Scott inaugurated midweek racing at the Annapolis Yacht Club in 1959. There was no Race Committee for the initial events, nor were the races scored or prizes awarded. There was, however, a picnic supper after sailing. Today, more than 125 yachts compete in the midweek festivities in a variety of handicap and one design classes.

Anne Arundel Opens First Boat Ramp; Schuh Vows it Won't be the Last

Larry Velten began asking the question 35 years ago. If Anne Arundel County has hundreds of miles of shoreline and tens of thousands of boat owners, why is it so hard to get to the water? For years, the only two public boat ramps in the county were at Sandy Point State Park and Annapolis' Truxtun Park. "We've been trying to get a boat ramp in Anne Arundel County since the late '70s or early '80s," said Velten, of Pasadena, one of the first residents to lobby county officials about opening a public ramp. On Monday afternoon, those efforts paid off. Dozens of residents and local officials gathered at Pasadena's Fort Smallwood Park for the opening of a $4.9 million boat ramp.

Annapolis area chef Darby Butts has taken that notion to the ends of the earth. Several weeks ago he was running Davis’ Pub in Eastport, but on Oct. 30 he landed at the South Pole. There, for the next year he’ll be running the food service operation at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, one of three Antarctic stations run by the National Science Foundation. “It’s minus-19, but windy. The wind chill is minus 47,” he told The Capital via satellite phone.

Classic Boats Sail into Annapolis this Fall

The annual Classic Wooden Boat Regatta will be held on September 26th – 27th in the Annapolis Harbor, and includes a variety of unique wooden boats in all shapes and sizes. I participated in the race a few years ago and struggled to concentrate on sail trim while gawking at all the beautiful yachts. It is a sight to behold. On Saturday visitors will have an opportunity to see the boats up close and meet some of the skippers and crew. A dingy race will be held at noon, and wooden boat experts will be on hand from 1-4pm.
