One of the most thrilling local regattas begins its season next week.
The annual Wednesday Night Races, featuring more than 125 sailboats of all sizes, sets sail on the Severn River starting around 6 p.m., with the often spectacular finish on Spa Creek in front of the Annapolis Yacht Club, which sponsors the race.
The finish is weather-dependent, but many of the yachts start soaring up the creek around 7:15 p.m., then drop their sails just after crossing the finish line. Great places to view the finish, sometimes featuring colorful spinnaker sails, include the Spa Creek Bridge, Carroll’s Creek Cafe’s deck, the lounge at the Chart House and the street-end park on Fourth Street. The races can be called for lightning or lack of wind.
The series, which began in 1959, continues on Wednesdays through Aug. 27.
