Three one-design classes will contest championships as part of the Annapolis National Offshore One-Design regatta, being held this weekend on the Chesapeake Bay. Organized by the publishers of Sailing World and Cruising World magazines and sponsored by Sperry Top-Sider, the highly-successful NOOD series is held in six sailing cities around the country with Annapolis the third stop on the circuit.
J/70 class will conduct its East Coast Championship with a typically massive fleet of 56 boats. This is the second season for the popular new one-design, which has sold at a record rate. San Diego skipper Bennett Greenwald and his team aboard Perseverance return to defend their Annapolis NOOD title. Catapult, skippered by Joel Ronning of Minneapolis, MN, was runner-up a year ago. Another notable out-of-town skipper is Brian Keane (Weston, MA), who recently sailed Savasana to second place at Quantum Key West 2014.
Top four finishers at the Annapolis NOOD earn automatic berths in the J/70 World Championships, being held in October off Newport, R.I. In addition, the top two Corinthian teams (no professionals) receive berths to worlds.
