Designer Dan Faires dresses up the front porch and creates a classic holiday entrance using fresh greenery, all-natural materials and a traditional color palette.

From tree cuttings used around the door to decorations made from cranberries and burlap, this front porch is packed with all-natural holiday style.  Instead of dressing the topiaries with twinkle lights, a more organic approach was taken with garland made from candied cranberries and burlap ribbon.

Sometimes “old school” rules.

Ramon Matheu started in advertising before the era of computer-generated layout and design. As an artist, he thinks it worked to his advantage.

“I learned a lot of discipline as a designer doing things by hand,” said Matheu, fresh from a successful show and sale of his work at the Easton Waterfowl Festival last weekend.

Cruise of the Month: The Pull of the Push

After two weeks of fighting headwinds, Moment of Zen flies up the Bay and into the night on a following wind and sea...
Courtesy of: www.ChesapeakeBoating.net
By: Jody Argo Schroath

It had been that kind of cruise. You know that kind, when the wind and waves meet you head on every morning—sometimes with a gentle shove and sometimes like a couple of schoolyard bullies, rudely pushing and shoving until all you can do is whimper. Well, it had been precisely like that last September, when Rick the Husband, Skipper the Dog and I spent a week working our way down the Eastern Shore, then another week cruising north from Rudee Inlet in Virginia Beach. The wind had met us headlong at every turn. So on September 19, when we stuck our nose out of Indian Creek, off Fleets Bay, after a night at Chesapeake Boat Basin, we were stunned to find the wind blowing our way. It wasn’t much more than a zephyr, barely rippling the surface as it whispered across Fleet’s Bay from the south. Rick and I looked at each other in wonderment and quickly set about raising the sails. Skipper left his foul wind retreat under the cockpit table and stretched himself out luxuriously on the starboard cockpit cushion. Almost cautiously, we turned to head north-northeast toward Smith Point Light. The sails slowly filled, and we moved forward, It wasn’t riotous, but it was enough. Enough to be sailing at last. A few minutes later, as we came out from the lee of Windmill Point, the wind filled in, blowing six or seven knots now, and soon we were clipping along at a modest pace, the water burbling merrily as it slapped the bow. Rick and I were silent, afraid to break the spell and our turn of luck, each of us sure that any minute the wind would clock around to the north and each of us hoping that it would hold at least until we reached Point Lookout on the north shore of the Potomac. That would be all right, we told ourselves privately. We practically held our breath until we came within shouting distance of rusty red Smith Point Light.

Janet Yellen's confirmation hearing for the role of the next Federal Reserve Chief, begins this morning at 10:00am on Capitol Hill in front of the Senate Banking Committee.  Ms. Yellen will be the next Fed Chief.  In her prepared text released late yesterday, she hinted at continuing QE3 saying, "We have made good progress, but we have farther to go to regain the ground lost in the crisis and the recession." The Feds commitment to continued bond buying will keep interest rates low.

On the housing front, RealtyTrac reported that foreclosure filings rose by 2% in the latest weekly survey, but down 28% from year ago levels.  The increase in housing prices the catalyst behind the year-over-year declines.
What have rates done this week?

30-Year Conventional - Lower
Jumbo - Relatively Unchanged
FHA & VA Programs - Relatively Unchanged

Facing public opposition and a new mayor who opposes his plans, developer Mark Ordan said he is done with his proposed redevelopment of the former Fawcett Boat Supplies building.

Ordan and his investors canceled their proposed $20 million redevelopment of 110 Compromise St., the developer told The Capital on Tuesday. The election of Republican Mayor-elect Mike Pantelides sealed the decision, he said.

“Look at the new mayor, who was against it,” Ordan said. “It was hardly worth our time, so we threw in the towel.”

Greg Kaufman, one of the two sellers of the property, confirmed that Ordan walked away from the deal around the time of the Nov. 5 election.

Should I Wait Until Spring to List My Home?

Sometimes we start a market analysis project looking for one thing and end up discovering something else entirely. Recently we decided to dig into the data to see if it supported our feeling that winter is the best time to buy, and the worst time to sell. However, when we got the results we discovered that our assumptions were dead wrong.

As we roll through the holidays and into winter, many would-be sellers will be holding off on listing their home, waiting for the spring “selling season” to put their home on the market. But if you’re ready to sell your home now, is waiting until spring the best strategy? Not according to the data, it isn’t.

We pulled a year’s worth of data on three quarters of a million homes listed across the country and analyzed sales statistics by season. Here’s what we found:

  • Homes listed in winter sell faster: 46 days in winter vs. 55 days in summer
  • Homes listed in winter are more likely to sell: 59.2% sell in winter vs. 53.1% sell in summer
  • Homes listed in winter sell closest to their original price: a 2.7% drop from the final price in winter vs. a 5.2% drop from the final price in summer, worth more than $7,000 on a $300,000 home

Today’s hearth has undergone a makeover, and the traditional fireplace has transformed into a wonderful — and sometimes wacky — conversation piece. Peruse our collection of fireplace pictures that will warm up your soul!

The Peek-A-Boo Fireplace With glass doors on either side, this direct-vent gas fireplace creates ambience from every angle and looks great as part of a partition wall dividing living areas. The highly coveted community of Sherwood Forest is located just 4 miles from Annapolis on the banks of the Severn and Idle Rivers.  Although 65% of its population are full-time residents, it has gone to great lengths to maintain the summer retreat charm it was founded upon in 1913.  The houses can be painted brown, white or "Sherwood Green," ensuring the cottages blend in with the surrounding woods.  The community offers its residents a summer camp for their children and guests, general store, 9 hole golf course, swimming pool, tennis courts, playing fields, numerous community activity centers and unrestricted access to the Severn River.

Currently, there are five properties for sale in Sherwood Forest, ranging from a five bedroom, 7 bath extraordinary home with four levels, loft ceilings and water views from multiple rooms listed for $2,300,000 to a summer cottage with screened porches to enjoy outdoor living listed for $595,000.  In the past 30 days, one home has sold in the community for $835,000.
